On behalf of Jewish Deaf Congress, we extend our profound concern regarding the misinformation surrounding the tragic events of October 7, 2023 and the ongoing situation in Israel. These narratives, often propagated by pro-Palestinian groups and their supporters, have created a dangerous climate of misconception and hostility, particularly toward the Jewish community.
As Jewish Deaf individuals, we share a deep bond with our fellow Jewish students, faculty and staff at Gallaudet University, as well as with the board and staff of Hillel at Gallaudet. The spreading of misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda, alongside verbal and physical intimidation, suppression, and various forms of aggression, causes us great distress. These actions clearly show the growing threat of antisemitism we face. It is especially heartbreaking to witness vulnerable communities, such as those impacted by language deprivation, being targeted and manipulated through deceptive narratives.
We wholeheartedly stand in unwavering solidarity with Hillel at Gallaudet, alongside its students, faculty and staff, in their rightful quest to safety and self-defense against all forms of hatred and violence. We are appreciative for the efforts of Gallaudet University’s administration, campus safety team, and others who work tirelessly to create a safe and welcoming campus environment free from harm and intimidation. However there is still much work to be done.
As members of the Jewish Deaf community, we express our grief and outrage over the ongoing challenges and threats we face. For instance, during Hillel at Gallaudet’s “Ask Me Anything” event featuring Rabbi Yehoshua Soudakoff, we experienced loud protests from anti-Israel groups. Similarly, during the Palestine 101 event on November 21, 2024, there were alarming attempts to intimidate the Hillel director, a Hillel board member and a Gallaudet alumnus. Many universities and colleges across the country have taken proactive measures, updated their policies and publicly committed to combating antisemitism. We earnestly urge Gallaudet University to adopt comparable steps to protect the safety, dignity, and well-being of its Jewish students, faculty, staff and visitors.
We are dedicated to collaborating with Gallaudet University and Hillel at Gallaudet and other institutions of higher learning to foster an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish in a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
Sincerely,
the Jewish Deaf Congress Board
